Personal, Social and Health Education
At Doxey Academy we know that the teaching of PSHE is paramount to the success of our children. Our PSHE curriculum allows our pupils to study aspects of life that will help them thrive in the complex and challenging world we live in. We give them the opportunities to think about different areas of life, discuss issues and learn key skills in a safe environment before encountering them in the wider world.
We follow a spiral curriculum which introduces new and challenging learning, whilst building on what has been taught before. To guarantee that our pupils are ready for life in secondary school we ensure they are confident in understanding relationships, friendships, and interactions. We make sure they can manage conflicts and resolve disputes, as well as making choices, managing risks, and staying safe in all areas of life. We introduce our pupils to the world of work and encourage them to have high aspirations in this area.

Our PSHE curriculum focuses on 9 units which are covered every year. To support pupils learn about their health and wellbeing, we teach: Families and friendships, Safe relationships, Respecting ourselves and others, Physical health and Mental wellbeing, Growing and changing and Keeping safe. To support the pupils learn about living in the wider world, we teach: Belonging to a community, Media literacy and digital resilience and Money and careers
These areas focus on recognising and managing emotions. This helps children understand their feelings and those of others, fostering empathy. By exploring concepts like self-esteem, coping strategies, and personal achievements, children develop confidence and resilience in the face of challenges. Activities in PSHE encourage active listening, expressing oneself respectfully, and conflict resolution. Children learn about healthy friendships, family dynamics, and respecting diversity, which aids in forming positive social connections. Children learn about respecting different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles, which nurtures a sense of global citizenship. PSHE encourages children to think about fairness, responsibility, and the impact of their actions on others. Topics such as managing money, understanding the value of work, and basic safety (e.g., road safety, online safety) provide life skills essential for independence. Topics like puberty, moving to secondary school, or changes in family structure help children prepare for and adapt to life transitions.
