Languages

At Doxey Academy we ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. All pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in their learning of French - the ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2.

The four key language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, will be taught, and all necessary grammar, phonological awareness and vocabulary will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and also helping the children improve overall attainment in other subject areas.

The intent is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners and develop their confidence, motivation and skills in this area of learning. Learning a foreign language will open pupils’ minds and open doors of opportunity for their future selves.

Links to Personal Development

Learning a language takes time and effort, teaching persistence and coping with challenges. Experimenting with new words and expressions encourages imaginative thinking. These skills will help children’s mental wellbeing as they can be transferred to other areas of life.

Learning a new language often includes learning about the culture, traditions, and history of its speakers, fostering respect and curiosity about different ways of life enhancing a pupil’s understanding of living in the wider world. By understanding different cultural perspectives, children learn to see the world from others' points of view. Language skills also enable children to interact with a broader range of people, preparing them for their future lives. Children learn how interconnected the world is, fostering a sense of responsibility as global citizens.

Pupil’s cultural capital will be enhanced as learning basic French opens the world of travel to them.
