Art
At Doxey, our children will become ambitious, creative and skillful artists who show a strong understanding of techniques and skill. Our curriculum equips children with the theoretical, practical and disciplinary knowledge they need to dream big and fly high in the evolving creative society we live in. Our children are taught how to articulate and use the correct vocabulary to critique and reflect on artists’ artwork and their own pieces. They will be exposed to significant, diverse and modern artists and appraise their work, empowering them to make creative decisions as artists themselves. We will increase our children’s cultural capital by providing them with opportunities to visit galleries, attend workshops and be exposed to a progressive curriculum that celebrates a range of art from around the world, including our local area. During their time at Doxey, children will be taught about the seven elements of art. We believe that it is important that our children develop the resilience, skills and knowledge to produce their own masterpieces that are well considered, produced and reflected upon.
Links to Personal Development
Art plays a significant role in fostering children's personal development. Engaging in artistic activities—such as drawing, painting, sculpting—supports various aspects of a child’s growth, including emotional, cognitive, social, and motor skills development.
Art provides a safe outlet for children to express their feelings and ideas, helping them process emotions they might not yet have the words for. Engaging in art can be calming, reducing stress and helping children develop patience and focus. Successfully creating something gives children a sense of achievement and boosts their self-esteem which all help children’s health and wellbeing. Children’s character is developed during art by allowing them to develop their collaboration and communication skills. Group art projects teach children to share ideas, negotiate, and work together toward a common goal and discussing their artwork helps children articulate their thoughts and ideas.
Through our art curriculum we explore different art forms and this exposes children to diverse traditions and perspectives which in turn nurtures children’s empathy and it also provides them with global awareness. This learning helps teach children about different cultures and traditions helping them to understand differences and similarities when living in the wider world.
Art is key to developing children’s cultural capital. We expose children to some of the world’s greatest artists and we give children the opportunity to visit an art gallery to explore and appreciate art for themselves. We also offer extra-curricular art opportunities to give children the chance to explore art outside of the formal learning environment.
