Computing
At Doxey Academy our wish is for all of our children to be aspirational in all aspects of their lives, computing is an increasingly significant and integral part of everyday life and our computing curriculum equips all of our pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in the digital world both today and in the future. We are preparing our children use technology in ways which may have not yet been invented, our core values of resilience, kindness, self-belief, integrity and ambition will be vital to enable them to become well-rounded, digital citizens who use technology safely, responsibly, respectfully and creatively as they journey into the wider world.
We base our teaching on the ten principles of instruction identified by Rosenshine in every subject and this includes computing. We implement a range of adaptive teaching strategies and an understanding of individual starting points. We address gaps in prior knowledge, by revisiting key vocabulary during lessons and by using the technical equipment available to us as inclusive tools.
Links to Personal Development
Our computing curriculum develops children’s skills with using technology in preparation for Living in the wider world. Programming and working with technology often requires trial and error. Children will frequently encounter errors in their code or difficulty with tasks, which teaches them the importance of resilience. Computing encourages persistence, as children learn that success often comes from repeated attempts and they will then feel a sense of accomplishment when they finally solve a problem or complete a project, building self-confidence. In today’s world, digital literacy is an essential skill for personal and professional success. Through computing, children develop technological fluency, becoming comfortable with software, hardware, and digital tools that are part of everyday life. They learn to navigate the digital world safely and develop the ability to use technology creatively and efficiently, giving them a foundation for success in future careers and personal interests.
Children learn progressive computing skills including key aspects of the health and wellbeing strand including how to stay safe online and how to report instances of cyberbullying. The computing curriculum also teaches children how to recognise safe relationships online and what to do if they feel uncomfortable with any form of communication. We provide a computing extracurricular club allowing children to further their Cultural Capital as well.
