Geography

Our wish is for all children to be aspirational in all aspects of their lives, both now and in the future. Geography at Doxey Academy plays a significant part to enhance the children’s awareness of possibilities available to them; be that in terms of travel and cultural possibilities or lifestyle and career aspirations. We want all of our children to leave our school as skilled geographers, with a curiosity and fascination to learn about the world and an eagerness to explore it.

Our children will leave our school  with a clear sense of identify and understanding of where they belong; considering their local, national and global position. Through our progressive and inclusive Geography curriculum, all children will recognise how their lives are connected to others and how those lives are shaped by the environment around them.  Levels of prior knowledge and vocabulary will be built upon at every opportunity through carefully planned out units of work, covering the statutory expectations; developing a deep and precise understanding of the geography curriculum and a wide range of rich cultural capital that our children will need to succeed in their lives beyond primary education.

As geographers, our  pupils will understand that they can make a difference in their  world and that everyone impacts on the  environment. They will be aware that changes can happen through natural processes and human activity; and  that they can influence human activity so that changes happen for the best. As a result of the breadth and  depth of the  substantial knowledge within our Geography curriculum, children will appreciate and value diversity across the globe and will begin to  understand how countries work together to ensure the distributions of resources. They will develop great ambition for themselves and a strong internal motivation to embark upon any path in life they wish to take with the knowledge of  the type of careers available outside of their locality.

Our Geography lessons will extend far beyond our classroom walls, developing the children’s disciplinary knowledge. Geographers at Doxey Primary School will take part in fieldwork and will be able to apply their geographical skills to interpret and communicate their findings, deepening their understanding of geographical processes and enhancing their locational awareness.

Within their journey into the wider world, we want our school values and geography curriculum to shine through so that our children can make a positive contribution to their society and environment; becoming the best global citizens they can be.

Links to Personal Development

Geography plays an important role in children's personal development by broadening their understanding of the world and fostering various life skills. It goes beyond memorising maps and physical features, offering children insights into how people, cultures, environments, and economies are interconnected preparing them for Living in the wider world. Geography introduces children to different countries, cultures, and ways of life, helping them develop a broad, inclusive view of the world. It encourages cultural awareness, by exposing children to diverse traditions, languages, and societies, promoting respect and empathy for people from different backgrounds. It also teaches openness and tolerance, as children learn about the similarities and differences among people worldwide, helping to break down stereotypes and prejudice. This exposure to diverse perspectives encourages empathy, respect, and understanding, which are critical for building positive relationships in a multicultural world. It encourages children to think critically about global issues, appreciate cultural diversity, and develop a sense of social responsibility thus developing their character as well.

Children’s cultural capital will increase as they begin to understand about the world around them such as other countries, landmarks, cultures and as they begin to make future plans to travel.
